Baby teeth may be temporary, but they matter a great deal. They guide adult teeth into place, help speech and chewing, and shape your child's confidence.
Baby teeth usually start appearing around 6 months and all 20 are in by about age 3. They begin falling out around age 6 and are replaced by adult teeth through to about age 12. Caring for baby teeth with gentle brushing, low sugar and regular check-ups prevents decay and protects the adult teeth forming beneath.
When they come and go
- First tooth: around 6 months.
- All 20 baby teeth: by about age 3.
- First to fall out: around age 6.
- Last baby teeth replaced: by about age 12.
Why baby teeth matter
They hold space for adult teeth, so early loss from decay can cause crowding later. They also affect eating, speech and self-esteem.
How to care for them
- Clean gums even before teeth appear; brush twice daily once they do.
- Use a small soft brush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste.
- Avoid bottle-feeding to sleep and limit sugary snacks.
- Start dental visits by age one.
