Saliva protects your teeth, so a persistently dry mouth (xerostomia) is more than uncomfortable, it raises the risk of decay and gum problems.
Dry mouth is often caused by medications, dehydration, mouth breathing, certain conditions like diabetes, or ageing. Because saliva washes away acid and bacteria, a dry mouth raises the risk of cavities, gum disease and bad breath. Relieve it by sipping water, chewing sugar-free gum, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and treating the underlying cause.
