An impacted wisdom tooth is one that cannot fully emerge because there is no room or it is angled wrongly. It often causes problems that need treatment.
An impacted wisdom tooth is stuck under the gum or angled into the neighbouring tooth. It can cause pain, swelling, repeated infection, decay and crowding. Not all impactions need removal, but those causing symptoms or damaging nearby teeth should be taken out. An X-ray shows the position and guides the decision.
Signs of an impacted wisdom tooth
- Pain or pressure at the back of the jaw.
- Swelling, repeated gum infection, or bad taste.
- Difficulty opening the mouth or cleaning the area.
Treatment
If it is causing problems, removal is recommended. A straightforward or surgical extraction is done comfortably under anaesthesia. See our wisdom tooth removal guide and aftercare.
