Many parents hear their child grinding their teeth at night. It is common and usually harmless, but sometimes it needs attention.
Teeth grinding (bruxism) is common in children, often during sleep, and most outgrow it without harm as their teeth and jaws develop. Causes include new teeth coming in, an uneven bite, stress, or disturbed sleep. See a dentist if you notice worn teeth, tooth sensitivity, jaw or face pain, or if grinding is frequent and persistent.
Why children grind
- New teeth erupting or an adjusting bite.
- Stress, excitement or disturbed sleep.
- Sometimes linked to blocked airways.
When to see a dentist
- Visibly worn or chipped teeth.
- Tooth sensitivity or jaw and face pain.
- Frequent, persistent grinding.
Most children outgrow it. For adults, see bruxism. Book a paediatric check at The Tooth Studio.
